WEEK 10 PREVIEW: Cobras vs. Predators
GREENSBORO - The Cobras entered week 9 the least likely to make the NAL playoffs as they were one of three teams in the hunt for NAL postseason with Jacksonville ranked #4 and the Jersey Flight ranked #5. Last Saturday, Coach Res and the underdog Cobras entered a hostile Jacksonville Sharks arena but stunned Shark nation, going up 20-16 at halftime. With the solid performance from quarterback Aaron Aiken who threw 12 passes for 134 yards and scored 3 touchdowns which included two on the ground & one from the air. His top target Kendrick Ings had a standout performance leading the team in receptions with six, while recording a receiving touchdown and a kick return for a touchdown. Local Greensboro talent James Summers (WR/LB/QB) put his speed to the test against the Sharks defense also scoring two touchdowns both from the running game. Summers finished the night with 22 rushing yards. The biggest difference in this game came from special teams which was overwhelming in favor of Carolina this weekend, Kicker TC Stevens who still wears a cast from his arm injury, kicked a season high four deuces last saturday while adding a field goal and a perfect 5 for 5 on extra points. The combined performance put Carolina up 54-44 with time ticking down, the Cobras defense that held Jacksonville to only 16 points in the first half finished strong, held the Sharks from making a comeback and closed out this game up by 10.
Now 2-5 the Carolina Cobras have changed the playoff outlook going from the least likely to make the playoffs to most likely as they face the #3 Orlando Predators (4-3) this weekend Saturday, July 31st in Orlando, FL. The other two teams still in the hunt are the recently defeated Jacksonville Sharks (2-5) that travel up to New York to face the Albany Empire (5-1) who’s only loss this season came from Jacksonville but the odds of a repeat occurring on the road is unlikely. The Jersey Flight (2-5), return from a bye week to face the Columbus Lions (4-2) this Saturday in Columbus, GA. The Lions are undefeated against the Jersey Flight this year. The last time the Predators and Cobras faced each other it was a close finish in Carolina with Orlando coming away with the win by only three points (43-40).
The stage is set, cleats will soon be laced with playoffs on the line. This is the final week of regular season play for all six teams, with all playing in week 10. The Cobras will automatically advance to the postseason if both the Sharks & Flight fall this weekend, if any of those two teams win the Cobras will enter a final tie where stats come to play as the tie breaker.
