The Massachusetts Pirates professional arena football team in Worcester will bring back wide receiver Lavon Pearson for the upcoming season. Last season Pearson appeared in all 16 games and led the team with 83 receptions. He was also second on squad with 1,011 receiving yards, 22 touchdown catches and an average of 63.2 receiving yards per game.
Pearson’s numbers made him one of the top receivers in the National Arena League. His 83 receptions placed him second in the NAL. Pearson was also fifth in the league in TD grabs and receiving yards, seventh in yards per catch with 12.2 and 10th in receiving yards per game.
His main reason for coming back is due to his relationship with his quarterback.
“Sean Brackett. There’s nothing like having passes thrown from Sean Brackett. He’s a great quarterback. MVP. He’s got great accuracy. Sean is the best quarterback in the league. He just knows the game. He’s a smart guy and he knows what he’s doing. I’m looking forward to catching passes from him,” Pearson said.
He’s also looking forward to reuniting with his fellow receivers.
“Devonn Brown and Mardy Gilyard are coming back. I like playing with those guys. I feel like I’m back at home again,” he added.
Pirates President Jawad Yatim is happy to have Pearson back in the fold.
"Re-signing "Mr. Consistent" is a transaction that I made a priority heading into this off-season. Lavon was a player that stuck out to me immediately when training camp began last season. He's a real smooth route runner, catches the ball extremely well, has great vision and after the catch ability, can put pressure on a defense with his speed plus has a year under his belt in our system and in arena football in general. He'll understand the game more this year and will be much more comfortable with the playbook so he won't have to think as much while he's out there. He was as consistent a player as we had last year, recording a touchdown in 13 out of the 16 games he played. We’re definitely happy to have him back and he'll be a big piece for us moving forward," Yatim said.
A native of New Port News, VA, the 6’3” – 185 lb. receiver stated his college career at Feather River College in Quincy, CA where he rewrote their record books. He led the nation with 93 receptions for 1,601 yards and 12 TDs in 2013. He transferred to Tennessee Volunteers where he started in 16 of his 24 games leading the team in receptions (38) and receiving yards (409) with three scores in his senior season.
Last season was his first playing arena football but he said he got some great advice that contributed to his success.
Pearson said, “I had to adjust but I learned from Bones (Bagaunte) and Mardy Gilyard. They taught me a little bit. I learned from them and they got me on the right track.”
Last year, Pearson had a hand in two of the most memorable plays in the Pirates first year of existence. He had not one, but two walk-off touchdown receptions in home wins over the Columbus Lions.
On May 6, quarterback Sean Brackett hit Pearson with a ten yard touchdown pass with five seconds remaining to give the Pirates a 44-37 victory over the Lions at the DCU Center. On June 16 the pair teamed up again, this time with 4.4 seconds on the clock as the Pirates pulled out a 62-55 victory with a two yard strike.
“That was my first time having game winning touchdowns. I had a great time. It was a great experience having those touchdowns and the crowd went crazy,” Pearson said.
When it comes to chasing the championship, Pearson says 2019 will be even better for the Pirates.
“We just have to get back to the playoffs and win the championship. We were close. I felt like it was my fault because I didn’t play in the playoff game. This year it won’t happen like that. We’re going to get that ring.”
