Pirates Name Shelley Defensive Coordinator

The Massachusetts Pirates professional arena football team in Worcester have named Tim Shelley as its Defensive Coordinator for the 2019 season.

A veteran arena ball defensive back, Shelley got his first taste of coaching in arena football last season with the Georgia Doom in the American Arena League. There he was the Director of Football Operations and the Defensive Coordinator. The Doom had the number one ranked defense in the AAL.

“I’m an aggressive man to man guy,” he said as he described his philosophy.  “I like to oppose my will on defense and bend but don’t break. In arena football it is harder to score once you get close to the end zone. I like to pin my ears back and go after an offense,” he added.

Prior to coaching, the former defensive back for Fort Valley State in Georgia, Shelley played six seasons in two arena leagues.

“I played in the Arena Football League and in the Indoor Football League so I have a lot of experience with the arena game. I played for the Tampa Bay Storm, the Spokane Shock and the Portland Steel (in the AFL) and the (IFL) Green Bay Blizzard and the Cedar Rapids Titans,” he said.

Pirates Head Coach Anthony Payton was the offensive coordinator in Portland when Shelly was a defensive back with the Steel. That’s where they gained mutual respect for each other.

“The first thing he said to me was, “Coach Payton, are you the Offensive Coordinator?” I said yes, who are you? He said, “just call me your biggest nightmare…I’m shutting down everything on this side of the field.” After that he was one of my favorite guys. I’m glad to have him on the staff,” Payton said.

Payton added, “The biggest thing that I believe that Tim brings to the Pirates is the fact that I can trust him and that’s huge for me because I want to be surrounded by guys that I can trust. If I ask him to do something it’s going to get done vs. not relaying the information. A lot of times with coaching staffs things get lost in translation from people not paying attention to detail and I believe that Coach Shelley is a very attention to detail type guy. He’s accountable, on time and that’s huge for me. Coach Shelley was a great player and I believe he’ll be a great coach. Just by talking with him on the phone and watching his body of work last year, I believe he’s going to do a great job.”

Now Shelley is looking forward to coaching in the National Arena League and working with the talented defensive backs who will be with the Pirates in 2019.

“I’ve seen the players who have been signed and I’m looking forward to working with those guys. I know we’re going to do great things this year. I’m a big fundamental guy. I want to come in and teach guys the fundamentals, the angles of the game and to be aggressive. I know that the Carolina Cobras won the championship last year but that’s going to change this year. We’re going to bring that championship back to Massachusetts and Worcester.  I know there is good competition with Jacksonville and Columbus and I know they added new teams with New York and Orlando,” Shelley said.
