As the Massachusetts Pirates arena football team in Worcester prepare to set sail into the 2019 season there are a lot of new players on the squad. Coming off of a difficult loss in the playoffs last season the team hopes that these new faces will help get them over the hump.
Rookie defensive back Lou Figaro, a native from Everett, Massachusetts, played ball at the University of Wisconsin. After college, he spent time with the Browns and most recently with the Salt Lake Stallions of the AAF. He says that his transition to arena football has been fluid and full of learning.
“The transition to arena football has been pretty smooth. It’s not as hard as I thought it was. You learn as you go when you play. We have some great coaches that have been here for a long time so it’s not that bad,” stated Figaro. “The toughest part is the slot receiver running in motion but I’m getting the hang of it.”
First-year offensive linemen Kenny Lacy, a football and basketball star at his high school in Phoenix, Arizona, went to college at UCLA. Unfortunately Lacy dealt with a nagging hip injury throughout his collegiate career. However, his hip is in much better shape and he is ready to give his all heading into his first year as a Pirate.
“My hips getting better every single day. It feels good to be back on the field and back in my routine. The physical therapist is doing a great job and I’m really excited.”
When asked about how coach Payton keeps all the new players on the same track Lacy says everyone has a common goal; to get better each and every day.
“A lot of us have played for bigtime schools so we all know how to get in there and practice together and work hard. Coach Payton does a fantastic job keeping everyone aligned and focusing on getting better day in and day out.”
The Pirates open up their season on April 6th at 7:00 p.m. at the DCU Center against the Carolina Cobras.
