The Massachusetts Pirates professional arena football team in Worcester has hired Pierre Chatman to coach their defensive line. Chatman played defensive end and outside linebacker for twelve seasons, having played at West Virginia State, Warner University and for several arena football teams.
Chatman has coaching experience from his days at Warner University. He served as their defensive line coach and the assistant strength and conditioning coordinator. He shares his feelings about his first time coaching professionally.
“This is my first year coaching professionally. I am very excited and nervous at the same time because I’m trying to do everything right,” says Chatman.
As far as his style of coaching goes Chatman looks to bring the Pirates back to the basics.
“I want to bring fundamentals back. As you get older in your career a lot of players lose the fundamentals of the game. I’ll teach them all of the fundamentals ranging from the get-off to the technique,” he says. “I am a very intense person and coach on and off of the field. I’m going to make sure the players are doing everything right.”
Pirates Head Coach Anthony Payton likes what he sees from Chatman and is excited to have him on the staff.
“Coach Chatman is a great guy. Ever since he’s been here he’s taken initiative and done everything I’ve asked him to do,” says Payton. “That’s all you can ask for in a coach. I am very happy to have him here.”
