Hicks Adds Punch to Pirates Attack

The Massachusetts Pirates professional arena football team in Worcester, MA has come to terms with fullback Quayvon Hicks for the 2019 season. Hicks led the National Arena League with 25.4 rushing yards per game last season playing for the Columbus Lions.

“I’m excited for the opportunity,” Hicks said. “I didn’t know much about the NAL but I am thankful for Columbus giving me the opportunity to play and to get my name out there. I think Worcester is going to be a great place. There are a lot of great players up there. Even being a first year team they have written some history. I’m just joining the team and making more memories,” he added.

Hicks played three years of college ball at the University of Georgia helping the Bulldogs to an overall record of 28-11 where he compiled 23 carries for 166 yards and three rushing touchdowns. He added 12 receptions for 132 yards.  Hicks suffered an ACL injury before his final game and later was signed by the Tennessee Titans but was not able to pass the physical. In 2017 he continued his comeback signing with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Last season in 12 games with Columbus Hicks was second in the NAL in three categories with 305 rushing yards on 81 carries and 12 touchdowns. He calls his style is unpredictable when he touches the football.

“I try to bring some type of electricity every time I have the ball in my hands,” said the fullback. I love winning. Stay ready, stay grounded and my job is to help the team win. Being a bigger body back I think adds another dimension to the offense. I think they have done a great job in the passing game. You can look at that statistically over the course of last season, especially at the tail end. Not really having a ground game; I wouldn’t say it hurt them because they still won games without it, but it gives them another dimension for the offense.”

Pirates President Jawad Yatim can’t wait to have Hicks report to training camp.

"Quayvon is a very impactful signing for us. He was extremely productive last year in Columbus earning Offensive Rookie of the Year honors. He's a hard nose full back that can run, catch, and block extremely well. He was one of my favorite players in the NAL last year and when midnight struck on the 13th of September, when all players in our league became free agents. he was the first person I reached out to. He was Todd Gurley and Nick Chubb’s full back in college at Georgia and both those guys obviously had extremely productive careers and if you asked them I'm sure they'd tell you their fullback had an impact on what they did. There's been a good history of Georgia running backs in New England and Quayvon is no exception. He's a humble guy and will be a good presence in the locker room for us. I'm real glad he decided to bring his talents on up here to the northeast. Pirate Nation will enjoy watching him on Saturdays," Yatim said.

Hicks also averaged 7.7 yards per catch with 15 receptions for 119 yards and three scores and would not be averse to catching the ball for the Pirates.

“I don’t mind it. In today’s game you have to be versatile, you can’t be a one dimensional player at any level any more. You’ve got guys who are able to do it all. I’m just a guy who tries to train in all aspects, make sure I keep up the tempo, whether it’s catching or running. I make sure I’m able to match the same intensity. It’s important to me just as much as blocking. It’s all important. In order to play today’s football you have to be able to do it all. You have to be a jack of all trades,” he said.
