Devonn Brown, The Massachusetts Pirates leading receiver and All-National Arena League First Team offensive performer has re-signed with the team for the 2019 season. Brown led the Pirates with 24 touchdown receptions and was tops in the NAL averaging 19 yards per catch. Brown can’t wait to be back in Worcester.
“It means a lot to me. We finished off on a bad note and I had a bad taste in my mouth so I want to compete for the ring again and hopefully end up with a better situation than we had last year. A lot of the guys are coming back. It was great playing with them so that’s another reason to come back,” he said
Brown says there are several reasons why the Pirates offense was tops in the league in touchdowns and total offensive yards.
“We have a tremendous offensive coordinator in Coach Anthony Payton and it made it easier with Sean (Brackett) at quarterback. With my speed, taking the top off (the defense) I felt that they couldn’t cover us all together one on one, so they had to come with a scheme. We would beat the scheme by working together,” he added.
Pirates President Jawad Yatim knows the importance of having one of the fastest receivers in the league.
"Devonn really shined for us last year. His ability to stretch the field and garner the attention that he does really opens things up for the offense and his teammates. In my opinion he's the fastest player in the league, and I don't know many that would argue that. The league took notice last year as he was first team All-NAL and anytime you can bring an athlete like that back in the fold it’s a great thing for us. He's a great kid off the field and is dedicated to his craft and we really expect the same kind of production from him this year," he said.
Brown finished fourth in the NAL in receiving yards and touchdown receptions. The Long Beach California native also carried the ball six times for nine yards and a score. He recorded the only “UNO” on special teams for the Pirates and tallied 151 points on the season. He was tied for fifth in the NAL with 25 total touchdowns. Brown’s walk-off touchdown catch at the final horn against Carolina last July gave the Pirates a come from behind 56-53 victory over the Cobras. He called it the thrill of a lifetime.
“Actually that was my first walk-off touchdown. The excitement was unreal going through my head. I couldn’t believe it. It was crazy. That was really a memorable moment,” he said with pride.
The wide out had 54 receptions for 1,024 yards and even though he averaged 19 yards per catch, he wanted a little more.
“My goal is always to get 20 yards per catch,” Brown said. “Every season I want to average 20. I haven’t got there yet. Just because I’m playing indoors doesn’t mean I’m going to change my goals. I’ll just have to work ten times harder to reach it, but I’m down to do that. I like Massachusetts. Worcester is a great city. The fans show “Mass” support. That’s why I decided to re-sign. I’m looking forward to the 2019 season that we have ahead of us,” he said.
