The Massachusetts Pirates professional arena football team in Worcester, MA have signed former NFL offensive lineman Brandon Washington for the 2019 season. This past season Washington played in seven games for the Toronto Argonauts of the Canadian Football League. Last season Washington appeared in 11 contests helping Toronto to the Grey Cup Championship.
“I’m excited for the opportunity for another chance to play the game I love,” Washington said.
“I look forward to playing south of the border again. It’s a little different rules with three down lineman, but I can adjust to it. I just came back from Canada and won a Grey Cup there last year. When I was released in Canada I thought that might be it. Then this opportunity was presented to me,” he added.
After a three year career at the University of Miami where the 6’4,” 325 lb. guard was an All Atlantic Coast Conference performer as a sophomore, Washington was a sixth round draft pick of the NFL’s Philadelphia Eagles in 2012. That same season he signed with the St. Louis Rams and remained with the organization for three seasons. Washington landed with the Hamilton Tigers Cats in 2016 before moving on to Toronto where he won a title. The Pirates President Jawad Yatim is looking forward to having his NFL experience and CFL championship mentality within the organization.
"One of the interesting aspects of being in this role at my age is that I have personal ties with some of the players I bring in here. Brandon and I were actually teammates in prep school at Milford Academy back in 2008. I remember during our morning lifts we would warm up on the bench press and Brandon would throw up 315 like the plates were Styrofoam. He's a big time ball player in my opinion. I think he could be one of the best players in the league regardless of position. His pedigree is as good as you'll find in the NAL. He’s a former All-ACC selection at Miami, former NFL draft pick and was a Grey Cup Champion in Toronto last year. He has great size, strength and great feet like most people from South Florida. He’s fundamentally polished, absorbs information well, is a smart player and has great character. I've been recruiting him since we started the Pirates and I'm glad he's finally aboard the Pirate ship. He’s great pickup for us,” Yatim said.
Washington says he wants to bring all that and more to the Pirates.
“I think that in this day and age with my football mindset, I’m definitely going to bring that to the table,” he said. “I still feel like I have something to prove. I wasn’t a starter in the NFL so I went up to Canada to prove myself and I loved being the underdog. Now I’m still trying to put something on film to show the player I am,” Washington added.
After many years in the outdoor game, this will be his first arena football experience.
I’ve watched some game film and I can see everything is right there in your face. Everything looks a little more compact in the arena and the other thing is the three down linemen. I’m used to having a space to drag out when I’m playing at tackle and at guard you have help inside and outside. Now I look forward to the changes and the moves I can learn to get adjusted to the game,” he said.
