Massachusetts Pirates quarterback Sean Brackett, the Most Valuable Player in the National Arena League for 2018 has re-signed with the club for the upcoming season.
The 6-1, 205 lb. QB from Brooklyn, CT led the league in four offensive categories while guiding the team to a regular season first place finish with an 11-5 record.
Brackett completed 259 of 419 passes (61.8 %) for 3,170 yards, 74 touchdowns and 18 interceptions. He also ran 25 times for 111 yards and scored four touchdowns. He had a pair of two point conversions, including one that sealed an overtime win over the Maine Mammoths.
Despite missing almost three games due to a Canadian Football League tryout and a season ending leg injury, Brackett, a second team All-NAL offensive selection, led the league in total offense with 234.4 yards per game, 7.4 yards per play, 226.4 passing yards per game and 7.6 yards per passing attempt.
“I’m good,” Brackett said. “The offseason is going well, my rehab is going well so I am excited for the New Year. Now we can pick up where we left off. I think we have some unfinished business going into the new season,” Brackett said.
Another reason Brackett said he came back was the team chemistry.
“As a whole organization there is a family atmosphere and it’s perfect for me living in the New England area. I get to drive into work and practice every day so it’s a great opportunity to continue to do what I love, being around a great organization like the Pirates,” he added.
But did he ever envision that he would have this opportunity playing close to home?
“You have your hopes and dreams obviously and the only place around here would be the Patriots, so that would be goal number one, but the Massachusetts Pirates in Worcester is not a bad second option and for me it’s definitely option number one. It’s just a blessing to be able to play in front of family and friends every single weekend as a professional is something you can only dream about and it’s been great,” he said.
"Bringing Sean back was a top priority for us coming into this off-season,”said Pirates President Jawad Yatim. “He's our leader and played tremendously for us last season. Sean is a guy that attacks every day with a purpose and is determined to be the best player he can be and that hard work paid off for him last year. He's got all the tools and intangibles that you look for in a quarterback and we are thrilled to have him under center for us in 2019. He's as determined as anyone in our organization to bring a championship here to Massachusetts and we expect an abundance of great moments for our signal caller this upcoming season.” Yatim added.
A former Ivy Leaguer at Columbia, Brackett was a four year starter and an All-Ivy first team selection in 2010. After college Brackett had stops in the Arena Football League with Las Vegas, Jacksonville and Washington and he played a six game season in China with the Qingdao Clipper. Brackett says “it will take the whole organization for the Pirates to get to that “next level.”
“Everyone will have to do their part, work hard, set their egos aside and have the same goal. If you don’t have the same goal of winning the National Arena League Championship then you shouldn’t be around the Massachusetts Pirates. That’s the only goal we have this year. We want to lift up that championship trophy for the fans of Worcester and the fans of Massachusetts. If that’s not your goal then you won’t be a part of what we’re doing here. The sky’s the limit and we hope to reach that his year.”
