The Carolina Cobras found the perfect way to end their first National Arena League season – winning the championship, at home, in a blowout.
Quarterback Charles McCullum threw for seven touchdowns and ran for one more to lead the Cobras to a 66-8 win over the Columbus Lions tonight at the Greensboro Coliseum in the NAL title game.
Columbus never challenged the Cobras, who led 37-2 at halftime. In the first half, McCullum threw two touchdown passes to Phillip Barnett and one each to Tyrone Laughinghouse and Jordan Jolly. McCullum also ran for a first-half touchdown.
Owning the league’s best defense during the regular season, the Cobras didn’t allow a touchdown until 5:45 remained in the third quarter.
To get to the title game, Carolina (11-5) breezed past the Jacksonville Sharks 73-48 last week. Columbus (8-8) was seeded fourth in the four-team NAL playoffs but upset the first-place Massachusetts Pirates 50-36 on Aug. 11 to reach the championship game.
