NAL Announces All-NAL Defensive Honors- Sharks and Steel Lead the Way with 12 Selections

ATLANTA  – The National Arena League announced today the 2017 First and Second-Team selections for the All-NAL Defense. The player selection was based on the performance of outstanding arena football players during the 2017 regular season. Additionally, the League released the First and Second-Team All-NAL Kickers.

Following the NAL inaugural season, the Jacksonville Sharks and Monterrey Steel lead the pack with 12 All-NAL selections. Jacksonville boasting seven total All-NAL defensive selections, and the Monterrey Steel followed with an impressive five total defensive selections.

In the first year of the NAL, Jacksonville finished their regular season going 11-1. The Sharks’ defense knew how to bring the pressure totaling 34 interceptions and 10 fumble recoveries for a +26 turnover margin, seven more than any other team along with 34 total sacks. They also were the number one scoring defense allowing only 24.9 points per game.  Marvin Ross, currently with the CFL’s Calgary Stampeders, was named to the First-Team All-NAL list despite not spending the entire season with the Jacksonville Sharks. In addition to Ross, DL Jermiah Price, Jack Linebacker Charlie Hunt, and Defensive Back Erick McIntosh were all First-Team selections. Defensive Lineman Daylou Pierson and Defensive Back Micheaux Robinson were named Second-Team selections.

After going 7-5 in the NAL this season, the Monterrey Steel topped the league in total defense with 174.5 yards per game and were second in scoring defensive with 33.1 points per game with the help of their five All-NAL defensive selections. Monterrey’s defensive line was dominating all season long. Defensive Lineman Joe Sykes and Jabari Fletcher led the league in sacks with an incredible 28.5 sacks combined.  Along with Sykes and Fletcher, MLB Wes Mauia earned  All-NAL First-Team selection, while Defensive Back Svante Davenport earned Second-Team All-NAL honors. 

The Columbus Lions added three of their top guys to the All-NAL defensive list. After leading the NAL in interceptions with 10, Kyle Griswould earned First-Team All-NAL honors. Larry Edwards and Marte Sears earned Second-Team selections.

The High Country Grizzlies finished their first inaugural season as a franchise with two Second-Team All-NAL players, Defensive Linemen Brandon Sutton and Larry Ford.

The Lehigh Valley Steelhawks Defensive Back Rodney Hall Jr. earned All-NAL Second-Team honors. Hall led the league in total tackles this season with 44.5.

In addition to the All-NAL Defensive players, the NAL awarded Kicker Nick Belcher from the Jacksonville Sharks the First-Team All-NAL Kicker and Monterrey Steel’s Kicker Brandon Rutherford as Second-Team All-NAL.  Belcher led the League with an 85.4% PAT Kicking Percentage and led all kickers with 134 total points.
