Game REVIEW 5 6 17 vs WOLFPACK

Allentown, PA: The Lehigh Valley Steelhawks (6-1) dominated inside the PPL Center Saturday night as they claimed their sixth victory of the season. The Steelhawks offense started hot and the defense was relentless as they took down the Dayton Wolfpack, 68-6.

Lehigh Valley received the ball to start the game and scored their first touchdown a mere 80 seconds later when WR Darius Prince (4 catches, 73 yds) hauled in a 33 yard touchdown pass from QB Warren Smith Jr. (16 of 20, 148 yds, 5 tds). The same duo would combine for the next touchdown just two minutes later after the defense forced a fumble to get the ball back. DL Tommy Dover would recover another fumble in the endzone (his fourth defensive score of the season) as the Steelhawks jumped out to a 28-0 lead at the end of the first quarter.

The second quarter would feature the defense. Back to back interceptions on consecutive drives (Rodney Hall Jr. and Antonnio Brown) led to consecutive touchdown catches by Brandon Renford; and equally exciting touchdown celebrations by the receivers. Going into halftime, the ’Hawks had built a 47 point lead.

Finally in the third quarter, Dayton would end the shutout as WR Vaughn Cornelia made a great catch going over the wall for the touchdown. Those would be the only points the Wolfpack would muster however. Lehigh Valley cruised to the victory; final score: Steelhawks 68, Wolfpack 6.

This was another record breaking night as well – six points is the least amount of points allowed in a game in franchise history. On his first successful extra point of the night, K Spencer Hotaling (8 points scored) moved into sole possession of career PATs made in Steelhawks history as well. By game’s end, he now has 75 made extra points in this Steelhawks career.

Defense wins championships and the Steelhawks defense has rolled the past two weeks. This week they forced six fumbles, recovering four of them. They also added four interceptions – Hall Jr. (2), Brown, and LB Joe Koonce.

The Steelhawks have also completed the Domino’s 50 Point Challenge. For the next three days, fans can get 50% off menu priced pizzas at participating Lehigh Valley locations. Use the code SH50 online, or mention the Steelhawks 50 point challenge.

The Steelhawks will be on the road for the next few weeks but return to the Valley for a Saturday, June 3rd matchup with the High Country Grizzlies. Kickoff will be at 7:00pm on Embassy Bank Field inside the PPL Center.
