ATLANTA, GEORGIA – The National Arena League is proud to announce the league’s recipients of the Week Five Players of the Week. The league had just one game from this past weekend, and from that game the following winners for Offensive, Defensive, and Special Teams players are the week are as follows:
OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Warren Smith Jr (QB, Lehigh Valley Steelhawks)
Following in the footsteps of QB Tommy Grady, Steelhawks signal caller Warren Smith Jr. becomes the second player to win a weekly award twice this season. Among the leaders in all passing categories, Smith Jr. was once again the catalyst for his team in their 56-31 victory over the Georgia Firebirds. Smith completed 21 of 36 passes for 215 yards and six touchdowns. He also ran for 17 yards and an additional score in the game. He has led his team to an early 4-1 record heading into a much needed bye week.
DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Rodney Hall Jr. (DB, Lehigh Valley Steelhawks)
It wasn’t just the Steelhawks offense that made big plays this past weekend. Defensive Back Rodney Hall Jr. had a big game in the Steelhawks secondary where he intercepted two passes, recorded five tackles, and included another pass break up in the game while limiting the Firebirds to just 31 points on the night. He currently leads the league with 30 tackles to go along with his three interceptions.
SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Brandon Renford (WR/KR, Lehigh Valley Steelhawks)
For the second consecutive week a Steelhawk has been honored as the NAL Special Teams Player of the Week. Following Kicker Spencer Hotaling is Steelhawks standout Wide Receiver and Kick Returner Brandon Renford. Early in the second quarter, Renford took a kickoff from his own endzone, evaded multiple Firebirds defenders, and raced 55 yards to the house for a return touchdown. Renford also had a good day in the receiving category hauling in six catches for 50 yards and another score.
Week Six NAL Action has plenty of playoff implications as first the High Country Grizzlies (2-2) head to Georgia to face off against the Columbus Lions (2-2) where the winner will have an early grasp on a playoff seed. Then on Monday evening the battle of the unbeatens as the Jacksonville Sharks (4-0) cross the border to face the 3-0 Monterrey Steel who are coming off two straight bye weeks.
